Why Solar Panels Must Come Off Before a Roof Replacement
No roofer can tear off shingles under a live solar array. The panels, racking and wiring have to be removed first, and how they come off decides whether your system and its warranties survive the project.
When an untrained crew pulls panels, the common results are cracked modules, stripped rail hardware, lost clamps, damaged connectors and roof penetrations that leak after the new roof is installed. Many equipment and roof warranties also require that the work be done by qualified installers.
Remove Solar Reset handles the solar side of the roof replacement so your roofer can do theirs. We coordinate timing with your roofing contractor so the roof is never left open and the system is not down longer than needed.

Your roof-day checklist
- Removal scheduled around your roofer’s start date
- Panels and parts stored safely away from the roof
- Old penetrations sealed so the roof deck stays dry
- New flashing and mounts on the new roof
- System tested and verified after reinstall

Remove. Protect. Store. Reset. Verify.
Before, during and after photos go into your signed report, together with the inverter meter reading and a live check on your monitoring platform. You see exactly what came off the roof and what went back on.
What’s Included in Every Roof Replacement Job
Pre-removal diagnostic
We check production and equipment before removal, so existing problems are documented before anything is touched.
Labeled inventory
Every panel, rail, foot, optimizer or microinverter is labeled and logged, so your system goes back exactly as it was designed.
Watertight mounting
New mounts are flashed and sealed on the new roof. Every penetration is caulked and flashed watertight.
Torque-checked reinstall
Panels are leveled and torque-checked to the manufacturer’s specs, with wires secured clear of the roof surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about removing and reinstalling solar panels for a new roof. Don’t see your question? Call us at (469) 283-1089.
How long does solar panel removal for a roof replacement take?
Removal of a typical residential system usually takes one day, and reinstallation after the new roof is installed usually takes one to two days. Exact timing depends on system size, roof type and access, and we confirm the schedule with your roofer in advance.
Can my roofer remove the solar panels instead?
Roofers are not solar installers. Removing panels without the right training and tools can crack modules, damage connectors and void equipment warranties. Having a solar specialist handle the detach and reset protects your system and the new roof.
Where are my solar panels stored during the roof replacement?
Your panels and parts are labeled, inventoried and stored safely away from the roof work so they are not damaged by debris or foot traffic during the tear-off.
Will my solar system work the same after the new roof?
Yes. After the reinstall we confirm every panel and optimizer is producing, take a meter reading at the inverter, check the manufacturer’s monitoring platform and give you a signed report with before, during and after photos.
Do I need to tell my utility or solar monitoring company?
We will tell you if any notification is needed for your specific system and utility. In most cases the system is reconnected to the same inverter and monitoring account after the reset.
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels for a new roof?
Cost depends mainly on the number of panels, roof pitch and type, and the parts that need replacing. Request a free assessment and we will give you a written quote for your system.
